Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway Toby The Tram Engine

October 31st, 2009

Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway Toby The Tram Engine

You can tell from Toby’s serious expression that he means to get the job done–well. He is a small freight engine but also pulls local commuter cars. He is dark brown, with a gray bumper and skirt. Based on the award-winning television series Shining Time Station by the Reverend W. Awdry, the Thomas the Tank train system fulfills all of a child’s choo-choo dreams. Each vehicle has a different name, character, and face. It is wooden and 2 inches high with black plastic wheels. The magnetic bumpers at both ends of each vehicle make linkup easy. Children will become friends with each one, developing not only imaginative play but social skills and new motor and cognitive skill as they mature. –Sandy Hirsch

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Tempermental Toby
My son has had Toby for several years, and it still looks as good as the day we got it! (Despite hours and hours of playing and jostling against other trains in a drawer, mind you!)

Toby looks different from all the other engines on the Island of Sodor because he is a boxy tram engine. Although Toby is always happy to work, he can sometimes be very tempermental!

My son enjoys playing with Toby, and this train is a unique part of the Thomas and Friends collection.

5 Stars Thomas Toby Train
My son loves Thomas. Toby is one of his favorite. I would have to rate all Thomas trains 5 stars because of the smile they put on my son’s face.

5 Stars Nice & Durable Train
This is a great little train to add to my son’s set. He has the wooden trains & the diecast, Toby was a fun addition!

5 Stars Love it!
What is not to love about Toby?!!? Thomas products are always top quality to me. My son absolutely loves Toby.

5 Stars Great quality
Very well made and durable, as has been the case with all the wooden Thomas characters we’ve bought. We have a 2 year old boy who can be quite rough on them and they hold up well.

    5 Stars sequence game
This is a very fun game for children and adults. My husband and I love it.

4 Stars a very fun board game.
This is a very fun game to play with 4 people.I don’t know about the educational aspects of it but it was a great thing to bring on a cruise whn you have a few “sea” days.

    5 Stars LOVE this game!!
EVERYONE can play this game and will love it. We get new kids and grownups every year wanting to be added to “teams” to play around the pool. GREAT family game or game for 2. Dont try to play with 3 players however, no one can win!

4 Stars Very interesting game which requires both skill and luck. A fun game to play in a group.
This is a different game which can be played with regular cards but has interesting dynamics which require a player to be both offensive in scoring for their own team while also watching and preventing other players from scoring. Really fun with more than two players.

    5 Stars The best game
Really nice game. Easy to teach, easy to learn. If you take it to a party people will be able to pick it up quickly. Easy but challenging.

    User Ratings and Reviews

    4 Stars Cute, Durable, Educational
I purchased this product for my daughter who is about to turn 2, and she already knows some of her letters! She loves it and packs it around with her everywhere!!! The only problem I had with it, and I guess it’s not really not a “problem”, probably just a parent thing!, but, even at it’s lowest volume setting it’s still pretty loud I don’t know maybe it’s just that monkey, oh that monkey! – I like how it goes off by itself so the battery doesn’t drain itself…very handy!!

5 Stars Very educational, best toy I’ve bought!
I bought this for my 3 1/2 year old daughter for Christmas 2008. I am homeschooling her and wanted a tool to help her recognize letters and numbers while having fun. So while she can’t yet use many of the games I have to just rave that this is the best product that I’ve used that allows her to interact AND learn her numbers and letters. It also lets her pretend to be just like mommy while she “works on her computer”.

Many people brought up the issue of the volume button and that isn’t a problem for us. She knows it gets taken away if she pushes that button and that only Mommy can change the volume.

We use many other things to help with letter recognition but this is by far the most effective and just today we had a blast playing on the laptop!

3 Stars Fun for kids learning letters and numbers, but….
This is a good product for the price, but little pre-schoolers that can’t read need assistance picking games. All the games are listed out on the screen and only a parent can help them pick a game. So, my daughter lost interest b/c she just can’t use it by herself. Once I pick a game and explain to her what to do, then she enjoys it. So, if you are looking for a learning tool that your kids can do by themselves, this isn’t the one.

    4 Stars Great toy.
Very fun and well made except the battery hinge on the back. But they sell replacements for them.

5 Stars Small price for a great learning tool for preschoolers
I purchased two of these at $19 each for my two 3-year old granddaughters. A terrific value for an educational tool/toy that helps preschoolers with early learning through 30 interactive activities/games teaching ABCs, 123s, math games, music, etc. Truly an easy `tote and go’ item that keeps preschoolers occupied for hours. My 2-year old grandson is also an eager learner and uses it when his sister is at preschool!

Melissa and Doug Deluxe Latches Board

    October 30th, 2009

Melissa and Doug Deluxe Latches Board

Incredible value and superior craftsmanship make this item an early childhood favorite. Brightly colored, smooth-sanded pieces help build early shape, color, and size differentiation skills. Builds fine and gross motor skills while teaching colors.

    User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars More fun from Melissa & Doug
If you’re looking for a multi-challenging toy for a young child (1-3) this is sure to keep them happy. They will learn colors, numbers, and animals while using their hands to operate interesting latches.

Like other reviewers have stated, I found some of the latches to be stiff. The latch at 2 is especially so.

    Overall, a beautiful teaching “puzzle”.

5 Stars Not just for aspiring burglars and escape artists!
My two year old loves this! My kiddo is dexterous like you wouldn’t believe, and has a passion for opening and closing doors as well as removing covers and lids (electrical socket safety plugs, the backs of remotes, change purses, bottle tops, baby wipes) and opening clasps (wallet, watches, bracelets). If your child is the type who’s always looking for new and exciting ways to raise your blood pressure with feats of exquisite motor control, this latchboard is a great way to redirect that energy and curiousity.

I remember reading some horrified parent exclaim that perhaps teaching young kids to open latches and locks is a dangerous idea, but realistically speaking – the latches featured here probably aren’t used in a safety capacity anyway. (Unless you hide your dynamite behind a miniature chain locked door. And you might want to rethink that.)

The thing is also virtually indestructable. I can say this with confidence because it was “tested” by the brats next door, and those boys could destroy a padded cell. The colors and pictures are bright and appealing, too; it’s remarkably well made.

My only beef is the cost of Melissa and Doug products, but since it’s hand made I can understand why it’s necessary. Keep up the fine work, guys.

5 Stars 2nd Child and still like new
I bought this for my daughter when she was about 2 1/2. She enjoyed figuring out how to open all the latches and we had fun together talking about the animals, colors, and counting. She has played with the toy off and on for almost 2 years now. My son is 19 months old and discovered it in his sister’s room several months ago. He dragged it out to the family room and has played with it nearly every day. He loves opening and closing the doors and trying to figure out the latches. The toy seems to be extremely durable as both kids have fought over it and dropped it and it still looks like new.

5 Stars WE LOVE THIS TOY
Even my 7 year old will sit and fiddle with all the locks for a few minutes. It’s just “that” intriguing for kids. I bought it for my 2 year old and he loves it. So does my 3 year old nephew. This toy is so cool, that the kids will fight over it. So buy two!!!

5 Stars Latches Board keeps busy toddlers occupied
My Grandson is 2 & very busy. He rarely sits down,so I bought the Latches Board to see if it would interest him. The first time he played with it, he sat for 45 minutes playing with it. I was amazed at how it kept his interest & he continues to love playing with the various latches, knocking on the doors & peeking inside to see who is in there. I love it!
