5 Stars Great Quality Cube
This 4×4 cube is way better quality than my old one. The stickers on the old one peeled off soon after use and eventually broke. I have had no stickers peel and no broken pieces on this one. Keep in mind that all 4×4 cubes are stiff to move. But I sprayed silicon spray in it, and it moves beautifully now. If you are going to buy a 4×4 cube, I definitely recommend getting this one.

2 Stars Don’t bother…
With the resurgance of the Rubik’s cube over the past several years, it brought me back and with kids elementary and high school age I wanted to re-experience the fun of 25 years ago with the new generation so I purchased some Rubik’s brand cubes. 3×3, 4×4, 5×5 to share with my kids. They have been a lot of fun. The Rubik’s 3×3 is just as I remembered it. A bit stiff at first but with time (and a little silicon lubricant) it loosens up nicely. My 11 year old has already mastered that one! The 4×4 is a real disappointment though. Very sticky and jams up a lot, even with a liberal dose of silicon lubricant. Also, the 4×4 is very prone to popping cubies when you go too fast. Simply put, the Rubik’s brand 4×4 makes me tired. The Rubik’s 5×5 performs better. In my opinion, don’t waste your money on the Rubik’s brand 4×4. Instead, get a much better value from purchasing an Eastsheen 4×4.

2 Stars 4×4x4 Rubiks cube
The 4×4x4 Rubik’s cube is very hard to turn, locks up a lot, and pops a lot, too.

What am i saying ??

Well, it’s very hard to turn. If you would like to lubricate it with silicone it doesn’t make it any better.

It locks up a lot – meaning that it gets stuck. You cant turn the layer anymore. You have to twist back or twist other layers to get it back to work. This cube is NOT recommended for speed cubing.

It pops , A LOT. The piece come off all the time. I didn’t have one solve where one piece didn’t come off.

I recommend this cube for beginners. Those who never had any experience with a 4×4. But i do not recommend it to those who want to solve it fast or are annoyed by the lockups [ every second turn it locks up ] and pops [ it pops when you have a lockup and accidentally pushed too hard or you're turning the layers very fast ]

Rubiks Professor Cube 5×5

Everybody loves the standard 3×3 Rubik’s Cube, but see what kind of brain-teasing fun you can have with this oversized 5×5 cube. This is a must-have for the true Rubik’s aficionado. Includes one 5×5 cube.

5 Stars More is Better
A very challenging activity for a slow TV night. My 12 year old grandson stayed with it for hours, and solved it.

5 Stars Great toy – keep them entertained for hours!
I was skeptical purchasing this cube for my son reading all the bad reviews. He’s a “speed cuber” with the 3×3 and we warned him contanstly that this cube was not for speed cubing. He heeded our warning and we have had NO issues with the cube.

It is NOT fallen apart.

The stickers have NOT fallen off or come loose.

It’s such a great toy – provides hours of entertainment, makes you think, doesn’t need batteries, makes no noise, has no flashing lights, and is portable.

5 Stars Review
This rubik’s cube is a pretty good buy. It’s different from a normal 5×5 rubik’s cube in that it is smaller, just barely bigger than a 3×3. However, it is somewhat easier to work with than a normal rubik’s cube. The pieces don’t fall off as easily (although at times you have to “undo” a turn in order to get a piece to pop back in place). I would recommend it to someone who is interested in getting a 5×5.

4 Stars Great toy. Not Durable
I was excited the moment this arrived at my house. The first thing with it I noticed was how loose all the pieces were. Everytime I turn it, it feels like it’s going to break. On the second day with it my friends little sister was mixing it up because well it’s colorful and children like color. As she was doing it one of the white inside pieces had started to pop out. I pushed it back in and everything has been fine since then. Aside from the durability it’s a great toy and will keep you occupied for quite a few hours.

4 Stars Denfinitely only a puzzle cube, not for speed cubing
Good product and quality. This cube is definitely meant only as a puzzle cube and not a speed cube.

1 Star Massive disapointment
We purchased this gift thinking it would make a neat cube and game for a younger child. When we got it, it came in a flat envelope, and basically was a sheet of magnetic balls. Besides being pretty lame in the building arena, it was something I think our dogs could easily injest. We purchased through an Amazon vendor, and had difficulties returning them. Not something we would recommend.

5 Stars Fun
This product is a blast for me and my son the same you can make many different things. The liilte maganet balls are very stong and you dont need to get them too close to each other to stick to one another. Overall very fun.

5 Stars best toy I have ever had!
Saw it at a friend’s place and immediately had to order it. It is a fantastic new kind of puzzle which took me quite some time to figure out. Done with building the cube, I proceeded to build a plethora of other shapes, and after months of usage I still find new combinations and varieties.

This toy is not for young children! They love it, but it is dangerous to swallow 2 or more strong magnets.

Best toy I have ever had! Always a hit in a get-together!

5 Stars Addictive Magnets
First off….yes, the magnets come flat…you have to make the cube, which can be a challenge at first. This is not for kids or animals or pc equipment.

I’ve enjoyed the set and so has my 13 year old son. We scout the net for different designs to make. Fun stuff!

ThinkFun Shape By Shape

February 25th, 2010

ThinkFun Shape By Shape

Based on the ancient game of tangrams, Shape by Shape is the quietly absorbing game of fitting 14 pieces inside a puzzle frame. Not as simple as it sounds, players are challenged to match the image on each of 60 cards using six red pieces to form the card’s subject and eight yellow pieces to form its background. If needed, hints on the back of each card will aid the player. In addition to the 60 puzzles provided there are 27,268 ways to arrange the pieces inside the puzzle frame. Children who can draw up a master list will be well on their way to brilliant careers in math or engineering. This compact, nicely designed game includes a plastic drawer below the puzzle frame to hold the cards. –Wendy Slotboom

4 Stars So hard my brain is sore
You just have to love an engaging activity that involves a small handful of simple shapes. The only complaint I have is that these puzzles are hard – really hard.

5 Stars Wonderful!!
I bought this toy ThinkFun Shape By Shape for my 4.5 y/o. He loves it, and it keeps him away from the t.v. and busy when I am helping the older children with school work. I have never seen my son sit still for as long as he has in the last week, and each time he solves a puzzle he jumps up and down with excitement. Now he can’t wait to show everybody who comes over how smart he is because he can do these puzzles. I just can’t say enough about it, even my older children are playing with it.

5 Stars fun that makes you think
I got this game for my 10 year old daughter because of 2 reasons. First, sometimes she wants to play games when no one else does. This game is something she can do on her own, or everyone can take turns. The other reason is to help her learn to think things through this is a great educational toy – you have to think not only about what you are doing now but what your next move will be. I really recommend this not just for the fun but for the education value as well – this is both of those and just makes for hours of fun.

5 Stars Not just for kids!
This is a great little game! However, it is NOT just for kids. My forty-something husband has worked the puzzles more than our kids (6,11,13.) I love that is comes with the nylon storage bag. No worries about a torn box! FYI, I have seen similar games that are designed to play with others and in teams. This one is designed as single player.

5 Stars Great Product
I’m a middle school English teacher. When my students finish their work early, they are allowed to play with logic puzzles that I have acquired over the years. I just purchased this product, along with several others, and am extremely happy with it. It really makes you think.

I completed the rooster; it took a while but I did it. You feel such accomplishment when you get all the pieces to work. When the kids are successful, they will say (tongue in cheek), “I smart.” After completing it, I couldn’t help saying, “I smart.” Get one–you won’t regret it.

ThinkFun Gordians Knot

February 15th, 2010

ThinkFun Gordians Knot

An ancient mystery is reinvented for mind-bending, modern-day fun. Gordian’s Knot Brainteaser Challenge from ThinkFun is based on the Gordian knot tied by Midas. The Great Oracles proclaimed that the person who solved the puzzle would rule the world. This colorful knot features six interlocking pieces, but it takes a whopping 69 different moves to take the knot apart. By sliding the six pieces past each other, the Gordian’s Knot will come apart. Some pieces will easily move throughout the process, but beware — that doesn’t mean you made the right move.

Game comes with a 40-page, step-by-step solution book in case you get stumped, and helps you put the knot back together once the puzzle is solved. For one player.

5 Stars What a challenge
Very nice puzzle… SO DIFFICULT!!!

I’m a Rubik fan, but this one has nothing to do. MUCH more difficult as it doesn’t seem to have any logic or pattern. If you are tired of “easy” ones, thi is the one to try. If you like being able to solve puzzles in a few hours, this is not your game.

4 Stars fascinating to 30 year old son & wife
My 30 year old son couldn’t put this down for days after opening it. It’s a great challenging time consuming idea.

2 Stars Fun, but buyer beware.
This is a fun puzzle, but buyer beware, it is VERY difficult! If you get frustrated easily you might want to try a different puzzle.

I have several problems with this puzzle. First, it is clear it was designed with children in mind because it is too small for adult hands. I am an average sized guy, not big, but not small either yet I had issues with trying to move some of the pieces because they were too small to grasp properly. I loaned this puzzle to my manager at work who is a very big guy with hands about three times the size of mine and he had even more issues than I did with the puzzle’s size. This puzzle is more suited to adults with small hands or children, but I can’t understand why ThinkFun would design a puzzle this difficult and build it for a child’s hands.

Second, I also had issues with having to ‘force’ some of the pieces to get them to move. For example: the 4th move to solve the puzzle involves moving the yellow piece down. When I began working with the puzzle, I wanted to move the yellow piece down on the 4th move because it looked like it would move, but try as I might, the yellow piece would not budge. I tried moving other pieces then and ended up at a dead end that would only lead to putting the puzzled back to it’s original configuration. I had to peek in the solution book at move number four to figure out where to go next and low and behold, the correct move was to move the yellow piece down as I had originally suspected. I had to use considerable ‘force’ to move that piece even though it was MEANT to move at that point in the solution. I had to force the yellow piece so hard that when it finally moved I dropped the puzzle on the floor (again due to it being too small for adult hands). This is also a chronic problem with the blue and purple pieces as well. I would work with the puzzle some more and get to a point where it looked like the purple or blue pieces SHOULD move but they would not. So I had to go back to the solution again to confirm what I was trying to do was correct, then go back to the puzzle, ‘force’ the blue or purple piece that was SUPPOSED to move and go from there. I had to refer to the solution book 15 times to verify that the piece I was trying to move was the correct one so I could go back to the puzzle and ‘force’ the piece. This irritates the heck out of me because I could have solved this puzzle WITHOUT looking at the solution book if the pieces would have just moved when they were supposed to.

I also have an issue with the solution book itself. I did NOT find any mistakes in it, but it is so cheaply bound that turning the pages is almost impossible. The book is bound with this cheap, plastic wiring that makes turning the pages nearly impossible and also makes it hard to keep the book open to a particular page. I don’t know why ThinkFun didn’t make this solution book a booklet with two staples in the middle as the binding. It would have made turning the pages much easier and would have allowed the player to keep the book open to certain pages a manageable task.

This puzzle is not very educational either. There is no real ‘logic’ to use in order to solve Gordian’s Knot, just CAREFULLY observe where the pieces are as the puzzle evolves toward the solution and eventually you will get it (even if you have to ‘force’ pieces to do so). If you want a puzzle that uses ‘logic’ instead of ‘forcing’ pieces try Top Spin. I bought Top Spin when ThinkFun used to be the company Binary Arts. Top Spin is based on the Gray Binary System so if you learn the ‘logic’ behind that you will find Top Spin very enjoyable.

If you are a patient, intelligent adult with small hands or have a bright child, Gordian’s Knot might be for you. Especially if you don’t mind a shoddy solution book and ‘forcing’ pieces that is. If you want a puzzle that requires ‘logic’ instead of ‘forcing’ pieces, try Top Spin instead.

5 Stars great for road trips!
This was a lot of fun to work out. The instructions book is a little annoying because the pages get stuck in the spiral until it is well worn!

5 Stars Vey Fun And Chalenging Puzzle
The ThinkFun Gordians Knot is a wonderful puzzle that any person at any age can enjoy. It is very challenging and I have not yet gotten mine taken apart. It is nice to know that it comes with instructions, however, I plan not to use them. But it is still nice to know that there is a safety net if you absolute can not solve it. It is very durable and can be set down at any stage of the puzzle and will remain in that shape, until you are ready to work with it again. I highly recommend this great puzzle to anyone who is looking for a fun and chalenging brain teaser to figure out.
