5 Stars Fun game and full of learning
My son has had this game for a year now and it is by far his favorite Leapster game. I enjoy playing it too. It has multiple levels, several different tracks and tons of learning packed in. You have so much fun playing you don’t realize you are being educated at the same time!

5 Stars Excitement
My 4 year old nephew was extremely excited about this product and bengan playing with it right away. I like this product line and it keeps him entertained during road trips etc. Highly recommended.

5 Stars Educational and fun
This cartridge kept my children’s interest for quite a while. The funny thing is I never knew it included spelling games because they never played them. Guess they weren’t interested in that part.

The games involve driving a car around — the child gets to pick the course. Each course has different skills it works on. The setup is basically the same. The car must avoid road hazards while answering questions (by bumping the car with the correct answer, driving over the car with the answer or taking the turn in the road with the correct answer) to continue driving. The questions include things like filling in the missing number 1 _ 3 4 or filling in the missing letter to the word or which letter is the lower case “b” or answering which number is greater or less than another number.

There are two levels to choose from, so it can be played by kids from preschool through kindergarten. This game is a little too easy past kindergarten age but my son still enjoyed it in first grade.

5 Stars Great educational game for boys and girls
I bought this game for my daughter’s 5th birthday. She loves the movie Cars and now she loves the game too. The characters and voices are just like the ones in the movie, which makes it entertaining as well as educational. She loves the racing games on it and it’s so great that she is actually learning something while she’s playing. I also have a 3-year-old daughter who likes to play around with this game on the Leapster too. She doesn’t really know how to play the games yet, but she still enjoys the characters and is quite entertained by it as well. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone! If they love the movie, they will love this game!!

5 Stars Leapfrog Leapster Game Cars
I purchased the Cars Leapster Game for my 6-8 year old children as a gift. I now see that I should have purchased 2 of them becasue it has become their favorite out of all the games they already have. They love the graphics and the sounds.

5 Stars Fun, durable and educational toy
My husband sent me to the store to get magnetic letters for our 10 month old daughter, and I brought home this toy. And our daughter loves it! We can be cooking dinner and she’ll stand in front of the fridge and pull out & put in the letters. She doesn’t comprehend it yet, but she knows how to play the ABC song and she dances along with the music. My husband and I have sat in front of the fridge with her for over 30 minutes spelling different words and doing the sounds with her. And it’s durable too – she has pulled and thrown the letters off of the fridge and there has never been a problem with them. The jet sticks pretty well to the fridge – she has been able to push it to the bottom of the fridge, but can’t pull it off the fridge. And I love the 2 volume settings – we have it on the lowest setting and can still hear her in the kitchen if we are in the family room. This is a great toy!!!

5 Stars Great educational toy!!
Leapfrog Fridge Words Magnetic Word BuilderPlease note: this review refers to the newer airplane shaped Leapfrog Fridge Words Magnetic Word Builder, not the older version.

I purchased this item for my 17 month-old daughter along with the Leapfrog Fridge Phonics (sun shaped, not the older red and blue version). First off, I was thrilled that the upper-case letters from the Fridge Phonics are interchangeable with the lower-case letters from the Word Builder. Now my daughter can learn her upper and lower-case letters at the same time. A noted change with the new versions of this toy – if a letter has more than one phonetic sound, both sounds are given. For example, when the letter A is placed in the toy it gives the long and short vowel sound. This is also true for some of the consonants that give more than one sound (i.e. the letter C).

The only drawback to this toy is that at times the voice is not as clear as I would like. Also, with a younger child, having all 26 letters out at the same time may be over whelming, so I only put up about 10 letters at a time. Other than that, I am thrilled that I purchased this toy.

3 Stars newer version not compatible
We have the original Leap Frog Fridge phonics with the single letters. These are all capitals. This Word Whammer comes with only lower case AND the letters are not the same size/not compatible with the previous version. That is SO frustrating and obviously something that Leap Frog did purposefully and for monetary reasons. We generally love Leap Frog products but I was very disappointed that the letters were not interchangeable (as they were on the older version).

5 Stars Very good, educational toy.
Very educational toy. Daughter loves it. It has taught her how to build three letter words. Would recommend this to anyone.

5 Stars Great educational toy
I bought this as a present for my 3-year-old son. He very much enjoys finding the letters to make words and of course singing the ABC song. I would recommend this toy to other parents that are teaching their children the alphabet.

Melissa and Doug Alphabet Train Floor Puzzle

December 28th, 2009

Melissa and Doug Alphabet Train Floor Puzzle

This Alphabet Train puzzle includes 28 extra thick pieces to keep your little one engaged and learning. The self-correcting pieces make learning the alphabet easy and fun. Measures 120″ long.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Sturdy, Fun ABC Puzzle
This is a great puzzle for many reasons. First for parents this is a sturdy puzzle. We are in a puzzle phase right now and this puzzle is not showing any signs of wear. Second, the pictures are great. Some of the ABC animals are not ones that you normally find in the ABC books. Plus it is a train and with a boy, trains are always great.

5 Stars Wonderful Puzzle
I bought this for my son when he was about 26 months old. At the time, he could identify all of the upper case letters. With the help of this puzzle, he quickly learned all of the lower case letters. By the time he was 2 1/2, he could build this puzzle all by himself, as long as I made sure all of the pieces were turned over for him.

At first, I only gave him 3 or 4 pieces at a time so that he wasn’t too overwhelmed. Once he got those pieces in, I gave him 3 or 4 more, until it was finished.

This is a great first puzzle because all of the pieces go left to right (excellent prereading skill). It’s also easy to tell if the piece is upside down so it minimizes confusion.

I have bought this puzzle countless times for gifts because we love it so much. I continue to recommend it to family and friends. Soon, I will need to buy a new one for my son because after daily use, it is showing it’s wear. But, it’s held up very well over the last year and has been worth every penny.

4 Stars My 2 year old loves this puzzle!
My 2 year old loves this puzzle. The puzzle is big, but she loves to see the train grow across the room. It’s very durable, and she has learned both animals and her letters and can do the puzzle now by herself at 2.5.

5 Stars Excellent for letter recognition (the ABC song is not just a song)
This puzzle is a great beginning puzzle for a young pre-schooler. We bought this puzzle for our 3 year old. It is challenging for her as well as entertaining. I rated this puzzle 5 stars, but if 4.75 stars were an option, that would be a more accurate rating. It is not flawless – the main problem is that Melissa and Doug illustrated “X” with a fox, which obviously does not start with X. Admittedly, there aren’t many animals that start with X. In fact, I can only think of xenops, and this is thanks to an ABC book my daughter had when she was younger. Further, every piece except for U is an animal – U is illustrated with an umbrella. This seems inconsistent. Unicorn would have been a better option.

Aside from these relatively minor flaws, this puzzle is fantastic. There are 28 pieces. Two pieces form the locomotive and the other 26 pieces correspond to a train car illustrated with a letter in upper and lower case and an animal (except for the aforementioned umbrella) that starts with that letter (except for the fox for x). The puzzle is 10 feet long, so you need a big space to put it together. My daughter loves how long it is. And I love that it is one long puzzle because this forces my daughter to think about the alphabet song, identify the letter that comes next, search for and find the letter she identified and then fit that letter into the puzzle. Before she got this puzzle, I *thought* she knew her letters and the alphabet. However, I realized that she didn’t really think about each letter she sang in the song as corresponding to a with a letter in the written form. Similarly, while she could identify a letter as written when we showed it to her, she found it challenging to think about alphabetical order and hunt for the correct letter – she had to picture the letter in her mind in order to locate the letter. Thus, this puzzle was highly educational for her. When we first got the puzzle, each time we sat with her and sang the ABC song with her as we pointed to the letters. When we got to the last letter she had fitted into the puzzle, we would pause and ask what comes next. Once she identified that letter, she would search to it and we’d repeat our previous procedure, singing the alphabet song and identifying the next letter.

The pieces are very good quality and I can tell that they will last a long time. They fit well together but are not too loose. The peices are nice, chunky and thick. As I mentioned above, the puzzle is very long, so my daughter must sit on the floor and sift through the pieces to find the correct letter. This makes assembly of this puzzle particularly fun and interactive.

4 Stars puzzle
A great puzzle for my 4 year old who loves trains and is learning the alphabet.

Cranium Cariboo

December 12th, 2009

Cranium Cariboo

3 years & up. Magical treasure hunt game that reinforces four early learning fundamentals: letters, numbers, shapes and colors. Includes Cariboo Island game board, six treasure balls, two sets of cards (beginner and advanced), one key, a treasure chest, and rules sheet. For 2 to 4 players.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Kids love it
At the start I found this game to be dumb, but it has since grown on me. We love to play it with my daughter (She loves it).

Very educational for the little monkeys.

The biggest weakness of the game is that when you open a door, you can see under the adjacent doors. My daughter loves to cheat by looking under. My wife “modded” the rules to close the door after opening it. (Thus all doors are closed at all times). This has made the game more challenging because of the need to remember previously opened doors.

5 Stars Perfect gift
This is a perfect gift for children 2+. My 2 1/2 year old daughter has not lost interest since we received it 3 months ago. My 5 year old enjoys playing it with her sister and likes the advance play with both upper and lower case letters and larger quantities. Last month we Cariboo as a gift and the little boy who turned 2 has not put it away for weeks. His mother is amazed how he is learning his colors and shapes. What a great game!

5 Stars Great Game! Highly Recommend!
I can’t say enough good things about this game! My 3-year old son got it for Christmas, and still is as excited to play it as he was when he first got it. It is very easy to assemble, the instructions are very easy to understand, and kids and adults alike have a great time playing! It doesn’t take a long time to play and keeps little ones interested and learning (colors, shapes, numbers, letters) all at the same time. A great buy I would highly recommend for anyone who is looking for a great toddler game. It even comes with additional advanced cards to change out as your child gets older. Great game!

4 Stars Kids Crave Cariboo
This game is rated for 3+, but my 2-year-old loves it as much as my 4-year-old. The key and the balls are the highlights, and it’s fun to get the treasure to pop up at the end. While they are having fun, they are also practicing colors, shapes, numbers, and a few letters. Cute game!

4 Stars My 4 year old loves this game!
This is a neat game, got if for my son’s 4th birthday based on other customer reviews and was not disappointed. My son loves playing it, loves opening the doors with the keys and asks to play it again and again. My two year old who does not really understand the concept of the game also loves the use the key to open the doors and find the colored balls. I would definitely recommend it as a fun toy for preschoolers. I have a few complaints about the game, but they are minor. It is very quick to play, it only takes a few minutes and I wish it lasted a little longer so we didn’t just play it over and over again. We haven’t had it long and the plastic doors are already getting a little stuck/broken and the cards fall out easily so I worry a bit about its durability, and lastly I wish there was a way to put different “treasures” in the chest to keep it interesting and surprising for the kids. Instead there is a big pink gem in the treasure chest that is not removable, so opening the treasure chest at the end of the game is not very exciting after the first time you play. Overall though its fun and creative and gets my kids thinking about numbers, colors, and letters – a good toy!
