2 Stars Flawed
I usually really like Doug and Melissa products; oversall they are well made, colorful, and fun. This puzzle is the exception – neither my toddler nor I like it. All the pieces are the same shape, and only 1/2 of each animal is removable. In other words the cow piece is the same as the horse, sheep, etc. – the only difference is the color of the pieces. Having interchangable pieces just isn’t fun for my son – he gets no feeling of accomplishment when he gets the pieces and doesn’t understand why he can’t remove the entire animal as one piece.

5 Stars A Great Product
Just awesome. These are better than they look. Quality is awesome. Must have for Pre-K children. Pieces even seem to be dog (Boxer) sturdy.

2 Stars Flawed, but cute
I was looking for wooden puzzles for my daughter when I stumbled across these. They looked colorful and fun. I read the reviews, and saw one that said the pieces were all the same shape. Looking at the picture of the puzzle, I didn’t understand that comment, the animals all looked like different shapes and sizes to me. Once we received the puzzles, I understood. The removable pieces are all little half-arch shaped pieces, and the majority of the animal is not removable. The only part that removes are the back legs, so to speak, of the animals, and the cabs on the vehicles.

They are still functional and maybe they could inspire some creativity by pairing the wrong legs with wrong animals, but it definitely wasn’t what I was looking for. For the good price, it isn’t worth returning as my daughter will play with it, but I wouldn’t reccommend them to a friend.

4 Stars okay puzzles
I’ve order a few puzzles from Melissa and Doug. These would be my least favorite, but aren’t bad puzzles. I thought the whole animal/car would be removed- But just the back end of them can be removed. Some are similar and are difficult to figure out which goes with which.

3 Stars Good quality but not great
This is a nice wood puzzle set that is well done for the price. Some of the pegs have broken off but I guess that is to be expected over time.

LeapFrog Learn and Groove Alphabet Drum

January 4th, 2010

LeapFrog Learn and Groove Alphabet Drum

Get in the learning groove with this delightful drum. It displays light-up ABCs so your little one can learn the alphabet while playing, singing and dancing to the beat. Features three fun learning modes: Alphabet, Dance Along and Musical Play. Teaches language, creativity and physical movement in both English and Spanish. Requires 3 “AA” batteries (included). Measures 8″ tall.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Maybe this is just for “bangers”
Our daughter has had this drum for at least three months, and hasn’t shown much interest in it (or in banging things in general).

The toy itself it well made, and easily withstands the abuse a baby can throw at it. On my personal scale of “how annoying is this noise-making toy”, I’d have to say that this rates squarely between “Whoever got her this is going to pay dearly.” and “Oh no, daddy can’t find the batteries!”

As others have noted, getting your baby to make the connection that hitting the drum will make it do something is difficult, as the drum is constantly blinking or playing music. If your baby is banging on tables, trays, pets, etc., making the connection might be much easier.

I think the LeapFrog Learn & Groove Counting Maracas are better designed, and more interesting for babies.

3 Stars Too much in one
I don’t like this toy, because it tries to pack too much into one toy. Yes, exposing children to numbers and letters early on is good, and this toy will definitely get their attention, but I think the LED letters and numbers on top of the music are just too much at once. Maybe if you could turn off the background music and listen only to the numbers or letters, it would make a little more sense.

3 Stars It’s alright
This toy is just “okay.” We got it as a baby shower gift and we took it out when my daughter was around 6 months old. She couldn’t drum on it quite then, but now that she’s over a year, she’s able to drum without problems.

But does she like to play with this? Not so much. She’ll maybe get through half of the alphabet and then move on to the next toy. It’ll occupy her for maybe 30 seconds. So is it worth to have? I don’t think so. But maybe she’ll end up liking it down the road when she’s older. I guess only time will tell! :)

3 Stars Not very loud. Doesn’t keep our kid entertained for more than a couple of minutes.
Probably wouldn’t buy this item again. It doesn’t get very loud. Feels durable. I guess if our 19 month old would sit still for longer than 3 minutes she might enjoy this item more.

4 Stars 9 month old boy
I’ve been wanting to get this toy for my son ever since he was born. My goddaughter had this toy and she LOVED it and played with it constantly- and it was educational! I like the old leap frog drum a lot better though (the one she had) because it had a level for JUST letter and JUST numbers- and this new one doesn’t; just mostly letters. THAT was a little disappointing, but he still loves it, especially since he knows how to work it now. I would give it a 4 star rating as a whole.

Barbie and The Diamond Castle Princess Liana Doll

October 23rd, 2009

Barbie and The Diamond Castle Princess Liana Doll

Barbie doll is featured here as Princess Liana from “Barbie and The Diamond Castle” who sings two songs from the movie and wears a mesmerizing glittery gown that magically transforms with the flip of a switch. Her necklace lights up when she sings. Pair her with the Princess Alexa doll, sold separately, to hear beautiful duets. Requires 3 “button-cell” batteries, included. Doll measures 11.5″ tall.

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star Just another boring barbie doll
Another boring plastic MIC toy that was played with for 5 minutes and then ended up on the bottom of the toy box. Doesn’t provide endless hours of fun. Doesn’t promote creativity or imagination. Nowhere near as much fun as good old fashion paper and crayons.

5 Stars My daughter loves this!
I purchased this for my daughter because she loves the movie so much. Her eyes lit up when she saw this. I also got her the soundtrack, so she’s loving it right now. A comment from someone was made about the hair not looking the same as the picture. If you look at the back of Liana, there is a clear plastic piece that needs to be cut. Once that is cut, her hair looks like the picture. Just a little info in case this could help someone. My daughter loves this and will for a long time to come!

4 Stars Girls like her but the dress is awkward
The dress is and interesting idea but I think my daughters would rather have a normal dress. Still they like the doll.

4 Stars Barbie Diamond Castle Liana Doll
My 4 year old daughter loves this doll. The clothes cannot be removed but it doesn’t seem to bother her. She loves the music it plays.

4 Stars My daughter loves it…I think that I should have waited until it went on clearance
My daughter is a big barbie fan. She loves the diamond castle movie and always sings the “connected” song. All she asked santa for was the diamond castle barbie. So I bought both of the best friend barbies. My daughter loves them and still plays with them but I really should have waited because now it is $15.00 (which is what it is worth) and I paid like $27.00 for it.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars A really fabulous buy
This is an excellent tool for building an understanding of color, shapes, and patterns. There is so much room for learning by using this toy! And best of all, it’s fun! And, for us moms out there, keeping up with it is a breeze. It comes with it’s own vinyl storage case, and who can beat magnetic pieces that stick to the board to ease your child’s frustrations if the pieces don’t “stay” where they are put. The pictures included are really cute – I especially enjoy the duck pattern – and my daughter loves putting them together. All-in-all a really wonderful (and cheap!) investment for hours and hours of fun, stimulating activity! Kudos yet again, Melissa & Doug, for a really great product.

5 Stars Great Item
This is a great toy. I find myself making patterns with it too. I really like that it’s magnetic. The pieces stay in place perfectly, so no one gets frustrated if the board gets moved. It comes in a very nice storage container thats durable and portable. Great item!

5 Stars Melissa and Doug Make Pattern Blocks Accessible to All
The magnetic blocks, the well chosen patterns, and the variety of ways to use them make this an appropriate toy for even special needs early childhood. The range of learning skills encoumpassrs logic, art, math, problem-solving, and creativity, while being just plain fun! The storage is handy and makes it easy to pack and unpack the blocks, patterns and board. My two-year old special needs grandchildren enjoy playing and learning–each in their own way. Mom enjoys the easy pack up and storage.

Thanks again, Melissa and Doug!

3 Stars My daughter doesn’t play with it
The product is good but I wish it would have circle shapes also.

It’s nice but for some reason my daughter doesn’t play with it. She likes other puzzles and pattern sorters a lot but this one is not a hit for some reason. Maybe it’s not age appropriate. My daughter just turned 3.

4 Stars Melissa & Doug make great toys!!
I bought this for my granddaughter and she loves it. For beginners, you place the different shapes on the board where the imprint of the shape is. As they get better, you can create your own pictures using the various shapes. It’s magnetic so it all stays in place. Great for the car.
