5 Stars 5-year-old girl loves Animal Genius
My daughter really enjoys this cartridge. It is clearly her favorite right now — in part because it is new, but also because it is different from most of the other Leapster cartridges — more oriented to learning facts, as opposed to learning reading and math.

The only downside is that, once the child as ‘earned’ enough points to get credit for the animal in question, the child must answer 10 questions in a limited amount of time. My daughter gets nervous and does not want to play with the cartridge unless an adult can be there to help her with the 10 questions. The questions are yes/no questions and are spoken, so the problem is not with the reading. I think that it is just performance anxiety!

4 Stars Animal Genius — Solid game
I’ve bought many a game for my son. Of all of them “Get Puzzled” was by far the best, the longest lasting, the most fun, diverse and educational game. I would recommend it first before any other games.

That being said…I just bought Animal Genius for him for his 5th birthday. He really likes it. Not as much as Get Puzzled…but I think it’s officially his second favorite.

Your child will learn a lot about animals. It’s very good at teaching them the difference between reptiles, amphibians and such. When you start the game, a menu will appear with 5 or 6 “locations” (Jungle, arctic, desert, etc.). In each of those locations there are 5 animals you can “earn.” Once you earn all 5 animals in each location the game is finished.

Once you choose one of the locations, you will have 4 mini games to choose from in which to “earn” enough points to “win” the animal. One of the mini games is using the stylus (pen) to erase the black screen, revealing an animal underneath. Your child will then have to identify the animal via multiple choice options at the bottom of the screen. The second mini game is played in a “top down” view (as if you were in a tree watching the ground)…you will play a racoon trying to gather all the acorns on the screen, but there is a wolf walking around trying to catch you. It teaches strategy…I actually like this game a lot, but my son does get a little scared of the wolf, even though it’s not scary looking. Luckily though, you don’t “have” to play that mini game. You can play any of the four mini games to earn the points…even if you play the same one over and over again. Once you earn enough points with the mini games…you will go to a 30 second multiple choice questionnaire:

Eagle

“I have feathers…true or false?”

“I lay eggs…true or false?”

“I am a predator…true or false?”

I believe it asks 10 questions. My son never got bored of them…which I thought he might. Once you answer the True False Questionnaire, you win your animal. So now when you click on the main menu location (Say ..the forest)the eagle will now be in the background. At this point you’d play again and try to win the next forest animal.

So basically:

1) Choose your location (Desert, Arctic, Jungle, grasslands, underwater)

2) Mini-game menu (You can choose 1 of 4 mini-games)

3) Earn 20 points by playing any or all of the mini games

4) Play “True/False” multiple choice game

5) Win your animal

Overall….this is a good game. But I think once the child beats the game…there’s not much reason to play it again. Get Puzzled, you could go back to over and over. None the less…I would buy ANY book that would teach my kid as much as he’s learned about animals in this game.

I would highly recommend it for a child of about 4-5 years old. I think 6 year olds will blow through the game in a day.

2 Stars Blank Screens
My 4 year old loves it,(Would be 4 or 5 stars) until 2 out of the 4 games stop working (Matchomatic & Feature Finder) I actually thought the game had to be defective so I returned it for another. It turns out this isn’t a defect! When you first start, you get to choose between 4 games (Maze Munch, Scratch & See, Feature Finder & Matchomatic) After a few levels, if you choose Matchomatic or Feature Finder, all you get is a blank screen. It appears that it’s “frozen” but you can go back by pressing the B button. My son get’s frustrated when he can no longer play those games so we have to start all over.

4 Stars Almost perfect…but…
OK–I’ll admit my son is the sensitive type. He *thinks* about things, and they bother him. He loved this game until two parts of it made him avoid it entirely.

#1- There are maze sections where you are an animal and you have to eat other animals while avoiding being eaten yourself. I think a lot of young kids who are the type that love animals may not take to being reminded that they eat each other and that they were trying to get “him”.

He just avoided doing the maze section before I realized why. I discovered it when he was at an advanced level which reqired him to earn more points and he had to do that task to earn them.

#2- To earn your animal you must answer yes/no questions about the animal and this section is timed. It caused him some anxiety to feel he was capable of answering the questions in time and that he was doing it correctly without my reassurance. My reassurance would delay his answering and he was then even more worried about the timing aspect.

He just turned 5 and is not generally neurotic, but just a heads up that the game can bring up some issues you might not have thought of.

Some of the y/n questions require past knowledge (i.e. does it lay eggs?)and some, luck (scribbling off the right parts of the picture to guess what animal is covered up)but it is fun, engaging and very educational.

4 Stars Lots to learn about animals
My kids (4 and 7) did learn a little about animals from this cartridge, but it did not hold their attention like some other cartridges. I played it myself and it is quite educational. It’s too bad they don’t play it as much as I’d like them to.

There are five habitats that the children get to explore. They can choose from grasslands, woodlands, ocean, rainforest or arctic. Within each habitat, there are four activities:

* Maze Munch — the child learns about what an animal likes to eat and what its predators are. He must navigate his animal through the maze to eat his food and avoid the predator.

* Scratch and See — the child learns what an animal looks like. He scratches the screen to reveal an animal which he must identify.

* Feature Finder — the child must match the animal with its feature. For instance, if the feature is predators, the child must find two predators from the ones shown.

*Matchomatic — the child must match some feature, like a baby animal to a grown up animal or a predator to a prey.

Occasionally, there is an “animal alert,” where the child must go to the different habitats to find an animal that doesn’t belong.

The child plays the games in each habitat for points. Once a child earns enough points, he gets to earn an animal for his habitat. He can earn 5 animals for each habitat at which point, he no longer can explore that habitat except to find an animal in the animal alert.

There is a lot to be learned from this cartridge. Little tidbits about the habitats and animals are given all along the way. I actually found the game play to be quite enjoyable. If only it held my children’s interest for longer, I’d give it the full five stars. As it did not, I will give it four stars.

5 Stars Fun Game
One of my coworker recommended this game. I ordered it and had a fun time playing it with my husband. I would recommend it to others.

5 Stars wonderful game!
This game is like speed scrabble, but requires less thinking since there are no points involved. It is portable, which is awesome, and it is easy to stop playing after any amount of time. In addition, the banana theme is just fun!

5 Stars 4 generations loved this game!
We played this several times with my 8 year old, my mom-in-law and grandmother. We all loved this game! The 8 year old even won 2 times! My 5 year old enjoys looking for specific letters and creating the alphabet. It is also a great take along game.

4 Stars A Scrabble alternative . . .
I bought two of these – one for our annual camping trip, and one as a birthday present for my sister-in-law, a Scrabble addict. We played several times on our trip, and my other sister-in-law even went out and bought one for my niece. It is faster than Scrabble and is not as intense, so for me it was more enjoyable. We have a couple of diehard Scrabble addicts in the family, and frankly, it is no fun to play Scrabble with them. Bananagrams turned out to be a happy medium – so good that the Scrabble board didn’t even come out. Kids and adults can play together. Keeping track of all the tiles could be a little tough, but generally this is a fun game and I would recommend it.

5 Stars Rattle those bones!
I agree with everyone else that it’s fun to play and simple enough for a child to play with adults, but what I like most are the real urea game pieces. They have a weight and texture about them that brings back memories of when I used to “rattle the bones” as a kid.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Good, but room for improvement
Our 18+ month-old really seems to like this, so she would probably give it four stars. I give it three. Overall, it’s a good toy. The two astronauts are about the same scale as Playmobil people, which means playmobil people can pilot the ship and drive the moon buggy. Oddly, the included dog and alien do not fit in the moon buggy or pilot areas, which writes off a whole slew of potentially interesting story lines for your child. How can the alien steal the ship or buggy if he doesn’t fit? The ship handle has a button with two soundtracks. One is a launch sequence and the other is just spacy sounds. I’m sure they could have packed ten more random sci-fi sounds in there. The doors pop off easily so that they don’t break off, which is good, but fastening them back on is a bit of a puzzle even for adults. A good aspect of this toy is that it is very much like a little dollhouse (there is a bed in the central compartment, for example), so it doesn’t have to be a rocket at all. Our toddler spends a fair amount of time putting creatures to bed in the central compartment. The moon buggy is quite popular by itself as well.

4 Stars good rocket ship for child’s imagination
After watching Wallace and Gromit’s quest for cheese, my 3 year old nephew loved the rocket ship. So for his birthday I was searching for something similar. Other rocket ship toys I saw were a bit too realistic – maybe good for older kids but too serious for little kids. This particular ship is whimsical, has neat little accessories, and is very simple to figure out. The only complaint was that parts came undone, but you could easily snap them back on. But my nephew loved the fun design and within minutes had multiple adventurous space travels with his astronaut friends, the dog, and the moon-buggy.

5 Stars Pricey but loved
Our son got this when he was 4, still plays with it at 5. All the kids, from 2 to 42, who visit our home love this rocket. We are going to get the Space Base, another toy that matches this one, by the same company.

Some of the rougher playing kids knock off the doors and hatches, but they always click right back into place.

5 Stars Great toy! A favorite in our house
This is a fantastic toy! When we first received it from my in-laws at Christmas for my then 18-month old, I thought “great, another noisy toy that will break in a week.” It’s now six months of solid use later and still looks and sounds like new. For the first two or three months both my kids (1-1/2 and 4-1/2) played with it on a near-daily basis. They still play with it at least once or twice weekly. I love that most of the parts fit inside the rocket (wish the alien and the crater fit, but we tuck them underneath). The hinges to the doors are made to come off without breaking in the event the kids get really rough with it, and easily go back on. Also, I think the alien glows in the dark (or at least seemed to when I saw it in my room the other night–might’ve just been a weird light thing going on). Like others have mentioned, don’t be scared by the price–this is a great toy–destined to become a classic.

5 Stars The Lift-Off Rocket is a blast!
I bought this product on Amazon for my grandson’s 2nd birthday, after first seeing it in a “high end” specialty children’s toy shop. It is colorful, easy for the children that haven’t yet developed their fine motor skills to play with and yet still has enough challenges to keep those that are adept with smaller objects.

He stopped opening gifts after laying eyes on his rocket and we couldn’t get it out of the packaging fast enough for him. He plays with it constantly, putting the figures in and out of the different cargo areas and driving around the little moon buggy. Even the 18 month old playmate has given this toy a heavy duty work out.

There will be more International Playthings items among our gift purchases for the little ones that we love.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars perfect gift
I highly recommed this pogo stick…but they really should put the minimum weight or the weight range on the write ups…. I don’t know any 9 year old that would weigh enough to do this. My 12 yr old (not skinny, not fat)can barely do it…but loves it..and it will last him a long time. He is below the minimum but close. So I don’t think I needed the next one down…he would have out grown it too fast.

5 Stars A good Pogo stick
Seems like a well-made, sturdy product. We haven’t worn out the rubber pad yet, but there was reordering info in the box. My 9-year old loves this stick, as it allows him to bounce up higher than his friend’s Pogo stick ;)

4 Stars Good buy!
This was exactly what I wished to purchase for my Grandson to fullfill his birthday request. It was a big hit.

5 Stars He still plays with it!
I bought this for my then 12 yr old son just after Christmas last year. He played with it non-stop for about 2 mths. He was learning tricks and letting so much energy out. Slowly, he has reduced the amount of time he plays with it, but it is still seeing play. In fact just this past weekend he had a group of friends over and they were all taking turns flying around on it and doing tricks.

Even with all the play this pogo stick has received, it is still in great shape. I haven’t had to change any of the parts – footpads or hand grips. And he’s been playing with it for over a year.

4 Stars Fun
This is a very powerful pogo stick for its size. i was disappointed with the durability of it, a piece broke off it just a little after i got it. and yes i saw the weight limit on it and i was in it, and yet i was bottoming it out. its fun, and good just its best at the lightest weigh that it recommends.

Original Gertie Ball Colors May Vary

Original Gertie Ball Colors May Vary

This unique ball has a slightly tacky feel, making it easy and delightful to catch and hold. 9 inch ball comes with a straw for easy inflation and deflation.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Fun, versatile, not perfect.
I love these balls- I had one when I was a kid, and put it on my two-year-old’s wishlist last year. A relative bought it and I was thrilled. However, I couldn’t stop my son from pulling the plug out with his teeth, as mentioned by another user. He also bit it several times- making a small tear one time (not all the way through the surface, and finally tearing through at a later time. I don’t like the length of the plug- it protrudes far into the center of the ball, so if, for example, a kid sits on it with the plug on the bottom, the plug could jab into their leg or bottom. Also, as mentioned, the ball does not bounce as expected if it lands on the hard plug. Still a fun toy, but more suited for elementary kids than toddlers.

1 Star This was a theraputic ball for rehab purposes
Unfortunately the wrong size (s) were sent which was very disappointing. I was also disappointed about the length of delivery.

4 Stars Great ball
Son loves it. Lightweight so I’m not scared about him playing with it in the house, and it’s soft and easy to grip for his small hands. Only concern is the stopper – my son sometimes gnaws at it, and I wish it weren’t so prominent.

4 Stars Durable toy
I like it, but if you order more than one, be sure to receive different colors, I received just one color….

2 Stars ok, but bad design
my child has spent a decent amount of time kicking this ball and playing with it. that’s the good news.

the bad news is the plug used to seal the ball (not shown in pictures) is hard plastic and protrudes. if thrown this hard piece of plastic could hit your child in the head or face. i don’t think it could poke an eye though. second, it won’t bounce right if it comes down on this plug. third, and most troubling, i believe a child could pull the plug out with her teeth. choking hazard.

i think they could have done better with the design.
